“May you live in interesting times!” said Sir Austen Chamberlain in a 1930’s speech, explaining that what sounds like a blessing was actually an ancient Chinese curse and that “There is no doubt that the curse has fallen on us. We move from one crisis to another.” Although the curse seems prescient today, it turns out it is fiction. However, although suspect, the curse is rich with meaning. Our cruise around Italy, hosted by Bay Isles Life publisher Sara Sinaiko and former federal prosecutor and Bay Isles resident Bob Gary, will reflect upon the phrase and discuss its significance and what it portends. Our journey will explore obfuscation throughout history and how humans have both survived and thrived.

Our voyage will be on the luxurious newly reimagined Crystal Serenity and will start in Rome and circle around Italy until reaching Venice. Roman history is rife with interesting times and our participants will have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Julius Caesar and learn about one of the first disinformation wars where Octavian proved a shrewd propagandist and created on coins the first archaic tweets. From Rome, we will then visit Sorrento, the perfect base to visit the stunning Island of Capri and Amalfi coast. We will witness the devastation at Pompeii or experience the splendor of the Royal Palace of Caserta. From there we will sail to Corfu, Greece, where the mythical Nausicaä saved Odysseus when he was shipwrecked. Our participants will see the great palace of Achillion, built by the sad and lonely Sisi, Empress of Austria. Sailing into one of the most beautiful fjords in the world, we will visit Kotor, Montenegro, and enjoy either a challenging hike to the top of St. John’s fortress or have a coffee in town and learn about the multiple civilizations who called this city home. Next, the group will visit Dubrovnik, known as King’s Landing in the popular TV series Game of Thrones and for its distinctive encircled old town. The culmination of the journey will be to arrive in Venice and view the city as was intended, by ship, sailing by the iconic San Marco Campanile.

Participants will have the opportunity to disembark and see La Biennale di Venezia, the 58th International Art Exhibition that is entitled “May You Live in Interesting Times.”

The beautiful Crystal Serenity was awarded World’s Best Cruise ship and enchants those who sail on her with unrivaled elegance. Your cruise will be one of the first after she comes out of dry-dock. Her redesign boasts a sophisticated look that blends Hollywood glamour with Fifth Avenue elegance. The included amenities on the Crystal Serenity seem endless, from acclaimed dining in eight elegant venues, unlimited fine wines and premium spirits, included gratuities, unlimited Wi-Fi, fitness programs and so much more. In addition, our group will have a private welcome cocktail party with our hosts, opportunities to take privately curated excursions and $200 per person shipboard credit.
